Now that the season of pumpkin everything is almost behind us, its time to use up those extra cans of pumpkin and make some healthy, delicious treats for your furry friend. I love these pumpkin treats and my boys love them even more. As soon as I start rolling out the dough, both are right by my feet, sniffing for crumbs and patiently waiting their turn to play sous chef by licking the bowl clean (the most important part). These homemade treats not only make your home smell yummy, they’re also made with real-food ingredients and packed with lots of hearty benefits.
Pumpkin: helps ease tummy troubles and is a great source of fiber
Banana: rich in potassium and improves digestion
Coconut Oil: promotes energy, boosts immune system, improves skin and coat
Coconut Flour: hypoallergenic and gluten free, low in sugar and carbs, making it an excellent alternative to wheat flour (gluten can be a common allergy for some dogs)
Pumpkin Banana Dog Treat Recipe
Makes about 30-45 treats,
depending on the size of your cutter
Ingredients:
1cup canned pumpkin
1 ripe banana
2 eggs
1/4 cup coconut oil (melted)
1 1/2 cups coconut flour (extra for dusting)
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees
2. Mix together wet ingredients first — remember to melt the coconut oil — then add flour
3. Form dough into a ball, then flatten into a disc…
OPTIONAL STEP - personally, once I flatten the dough into a disc, I like to wrap it in saran (plastic) wrap and let it chill in the fridge for about 10 minutes. It helps solidify the fats in the dough and I find it makes rolling out the dough easier
4. Dust the counter or a large space with flour, then roll dough out to about 1/4 - 1/8” thick. Grab your favorite cookie cutters and start to cut into shapes
5. Bake for about 15-20 minutes or until the edges are golden
6. Last, give your pup a little preview of what's to come by letting them lick the bowl
What is the shelf life on these? Should they be refrigerated?
Do these need to be refrigerated? Wasn’t sure the best way to store them. Thanks
